Tidal turbine performance and near-wake characteristics in a sheared turbulent inflow

Turbulent non-homogenous flow environments at high-energy tidal sites lead to variation in power performance of stream turbines. In addition, non-uniform loading due combined effects shear and elevated inflow turbulence affects device survivability. the current study, an active-grid generator is used mimic sheared-turbulent representative flood (low shear) ebb tides (high shear). The near-wake characteristics a turbine model measured conditions are compared where velocity uniform with low intensities (Ti). inflows were observed result 5–15% drop maximum coefficient when Ti case. An increase ?30% torque- ?50% thrust- fluctuations for sheared inflows. Unlike near axisymmetric wake profiles homogeneous cases, was incite asymmetry immediate impact more gradual effect on deficit integral length scales. data sets deemed valuable calibrating computational models better predict response optimize efficiency complementing take-off system.
